Antipsychotics Are Overprescribed to Dementia Patients, Increase Death Risk
Antipsychotic medications are likely being overprescribed and misused for people with dementia who are receiving home health care, a recent study has found. They were being used by about 17% of patients with Alzheimer’s or related dementias compared with about 6% of the control group.
Antipsychotics are currently one of few medications available to treat agitation and other psychological or behavioral symptoms of dementia. However, they carry a high risk of stroke or sudden cardiac death and may also increase the risk of falls.
The study looked at data from over 6,600 adults aged 65 or older who received home health care. Researchers found that not only were more patients with dementia likely to use antipsychotics, they also had worse “functional outcomes” when they did use these medications.
The most commonly prescribed antipsychotic in the study was quetiapine, which is used off-label for agitation or psychosis in dementia, in spite of little supporting evidence for its efficacy. The authors recommend that the need for antipsychotics should constantly be assessed, and if they are harmful or unnecessary, they should be “deprescribed”.
Rubber Plumbing Seals Can Leak Toxins Into Drinking Water
Rubber plumbing seals commonly contain additives that may leach into drinking water as it runs through pipes and out of the facet, according to some new research. The health effects of these compounds are unknown, but they are the same kind typically found in tire dust and are considered “potentially harmful”.
Across two separately conducted studies, researchers collected tap water from 20 buildings and then tested different types of rubber O-rings and gaskets in water for up to two weeks. They also analyzed how the rubber additives reacted with disinfectants in simulated drinking water.
All of the samples collected contained at least one type of additive with the highest amounts coming from faucets with aerators. In addition, two rubber additives known as DPG and 6PPD formed chlorinated byproducts, which can damage DNA, when they reacted with chlorinated disinfectants.
When it came to the seals left sitting in water, all of them released DPG and 6PPD (and chlorinated byproducts), except for the ones that were silicone-based. This indicates that “drinking water, as well as tire pollution, could be a route of human exposure to these compounds.”

10 Top Foods to Promote Hair Growth
Several key nutrients are needed for full, healthy hair, and certain foods are higher in them than others. Spinach, for example, contains three hair-helping nutrients– vitamin A, vitamin C, and iron– while avocados are rich in vitamin E, which may boost hair growth. Fatty fish is rich in protein and omega 3s, which may help reduce hair loss, and eggs contain biotin, a vitamin important for hair growth. Seeds, nuts, and legumes are also top choices for healthier locks. (More)
Honey-Vinegar Mixture Could Help Treat Infected Wounds
A mixture of honey and vinegar is an ancient herbal “remedy” known as an oxymel. It’s frequently used as a base to extract nutrients from herbs but also has health benefits by itself– as evidenced by a recent study. Researchers found that a combination of vinegar and medical-grade honey was able to kill a large number of bacteria associated with wounds, even though the two (vinegar & honey) tested separately could not kill the bacteria on their own. Hobbies Can Lower Depression Risk in Older Adults
Having a hobby can give you greater interest in life and may have even more far-reaching benefits for mental health. According to some recent research, hobbies may be especially important for older adults (age 65 and up) and were linked to fewer symptoms of depression. This held true across 16 different countries and 3 different continents. Hobbyists also reported higher overall levels of happiness and better life satisfaction. (More)
Specific Gut Bacteria May Improve Insulin Resistance
Much research over the last few decades has shown that many diseases may have a connection to gut health. This seems to be true for type 2 diabetes as well– or more specifically, for insulin resistance. Essentially, researchers have found that bacteria known as Alistipes indistinctus may help protect against insulin resistance, likely by reducing monosaccharide levels. The downside is that no probiotics currently contain Alistipes indistinctus, and it remains to be seen whether improving overall gut health would increase this specific bacteria. (More)
11 Key Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency is estimated to affect about 4 out of every 10 Americans, but it can be tricky to spot. Key signs to watch out for include fatigue, bone or joint pain, muscle pain, a depressed mood, and low energy. You might also experience more frequent illnesses, hair loss, or weight gain if you aren’t getting enough vitamin D as well as anxiety and irritability. Those who don’t get skin exposure to sunlight or have a GI disorder are at higher risk of a deficiency. (More)
